This month, FlexJobs is proud to feature and donate to Dress for Success, which provides professional clothing to help low-income women succeed in their work life.
Each month during 2019, FlexJobs is highlighting a fantastic nonprofit organization that we feel strongly about, and we will be donating $6,000 throughout the year! Come back each month to read about our selected nonprofit and see how they are helping to shape a better world.
Gaining Confidence Through Clothing
At FlexJobs we believe in helping people who want to find new or better jobs. Whether it’s a working parent, a military spouse, a retiree, or a person with disabilities, we desire to help job seekers land a job that improves their lives in every facet. Our latest donation to Dress for Success continues that goal of that helping improve the lives of those needing a job.
The mission statement of Dress for Success is to “empower women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and the development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.” Through providing professional clothing and accessories for interviews, Dress for Success has helped over 1 million women since its founding in 1997.
While the professional attire at FlexJobs is more along the lines of yoga pants and jeans (due to being a remote team), we know that how you dress affects how you feel. Looking and feeling confident going into job interviews and a new job makes a huge difference, and we’re thrilled to support Dress for Success in their efforts!
Going Beyond Work Wear
Seeking to the end the cycle of poverty and help women secure gainful employment, Dress for Success offers additional services to clients. Mock interviews and resume help are available at its career center, and mentors work to develop long-term relationships with clients to help them meet goals and succeed.
Dress for Success sees this investment in women as a way to improve economic development and achieve gender quality: “Besides physically equipping the client with apparel and accessories, our programs furnish her with a confidence that she carries forever and the knowledge that she can actively define her life, the direction she takes and what success means to her. … We believe that achieving gender equality is imperative to developing a sustainable and just world for all, which is possible by acknowledging the crucial role that women play in the world economy.”
Success Stories from Clients
With more than 150 affiliates spread out over 29 countries, Dress for Success collaborates with over 5,000 organizations to provide its services to women in need. Homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, immigration services, job training programs, educational organizations, and volunteers all help Dress for Success deliver its programs. Here’s what two clients had to say about their experience with Dress for Success:
“Thank you for making a very difficult time in my life a positive moment. I hope to help someone someday. There are no words that I can use to express my true heartfelt gratitude to everyone who helped in this process! ” —Unknown (Dress for Success Regina)
“Thank you so much for this lovely ‘feminine’ morning. I felt so spoiled! Most exiting was the presence of the two journalists who also helped me pick out clothes. What more can I say, except that I had a big smile on my face the whole day. My suit is not bad at all! Thank you!” —Justina (Dress for Success Amsterdam)
